Nikon will reportedly join Canon in ending development on high-end DSLR cameras

Nikkei Asia reports that camera maker Nikon will discontinue further development of its single-lens reflex (SLR) camera lineup and will give its effort in making small mirrorless camera. It had also reported that Nikon's D6 will be the last DSLR camera of Nikon.

For its part, Nikon called the report “speculation” and pointed out that the company “continues to produce, sell and service DSLRs. But there is no any evidence on further development in DSLR camera. The latest release was Nikon D6 which leads the discontinuation of the company's enter level D3500 and D5600 last month. The Nikkei report indicates that Nikon's development efforts will shift to mirrorless cameras, which are smaller and more lightweight.

Earlier ,mirrorless cameras were unable to match the image quality or lens choice of DSLR cameras, and their electronic viewfinders lagged behind the live preview that a DSLR’s optical viewfinder could provide. But recent mirrorless camera has eliminated this limitation and have been producing smaller and lighter camera. As mirrorless camera provide magnificent video quality, it will be favorable for a people using camera on multitasking.

The biggest contender of Nikon , Cannon also had announced that EOS-1D X Mark III to be its  last DSLR at the end of 2021 and full focus on mirrorless lineup. But it will still continue to manufacture entry  level DSLR for now.
