Redmi Note 12 Pro Review: Best Midrange Phone Of 2023?

Actually, Redmi Note 12 Pro is  nearly identical to the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, just with a 50MP primary camera in place of a 200MP one and 67W fast charging in place of 200W.

And guess what? The majority of consumers will be completely content with that combination if it results in better value for their money. The Redmi Note 12 Pro appears to be a great value at a starting price of just Rs. 38,999 (about USD 295) in Nepal. In fact, I believe that for 2023, this could already be the greatest midrange phone for the money! Period.

1.Design and Build

As I previously stated, the Redmi Note 12 Pro and its more expensive Pro+ brother are nearly identical, with the exception of the charging rates and camera sensors. That's accurate. But these two phones also have quite a different design aesthetic.

For some reason, Xiaomi chose a boxy design for the Note 12 Pro rather than a curved finish like on the Note 12 Pro+ (or even the normal Redmi Note 12 for that matter). Additionally, the purple color option I have—which, incidentally, is only available on the Note 12 Pro—is a bit of an eye-catcher.

It has an IP53 rating and all other necessary features, and Xiaomi even claims that this is the thinnest "Redmi Note Pro" phone yet. In addition, despite having the same glass sandwich structure and plastic frames as the 12 Pro+, it is much lighter. So it's quite obvious that in addition to everything else, design is a major focus here.

2.Performance

But as we all know, a streamlined design like that usually invariably means a weakened cooling system. The Note 12 Pro is also no different. To be fair, I never noticed the phone getting even the slightest bit warm during my normal daily usage, so it probably won't bother many others. It's a different thing when you put it through intense workloads like gaming, though.

The average frame rate and general gameplay stability for all the games I tried are rather comparable between the two phones, as you can see from this graph.

However, the Note 12 Pro's graphite-based cooling system, which was installed to allow for its compact design, is obviously no match for the beastly vapor chamber of the 12 Pro+. Even when playing resource-intensive games like Genshin Impact or Injustice 2, I wouldn't say the Note 12 Pro gets uncomfortable heated, but I should also point out that this is how the phone reacts during these chilly winter days. Therefore, we can readily anticipate slightly worse thermals this summer.

3.The Chinese MIUI experience

I have no complaints about the efficacy in casual settings. Having the same CPU on a phone that costs much less than the Note 12 Pro+ makes the Dimensity 1080, which is already a fantastic chipset, even better!

To be honest, using this phone's Chinese MIUI has also been a pleasant experience. Although it is a little bit too strict when it comes to battery optimization, it does a fantastic job with things like active memory management and UI fluidity. It only ran MIUI 13 on top of Android 12, not MIUI 14, which I would have preferred.

It's bad enough that Xiaomi doesn't guarantee a specific release date for software updates for the "Redmi Note" series like it does for its flagship and higher midrange devices; at the very least, Xiaomi should ship its most recent devices with the most recent software. After all, Android 13 has now been available for more than four months!

4.Camera

  • Triple camera setup at the back
  • (50MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro)
  • 16MP selfie camera (hole-punch)

5.Display

Now let's talk about the visual aspect of things. Fortunately, the Redmi Note 12 Pro has an excellent 6.67" OLED screen with a delicate color calibration that, in my opinion, appears stunning. Of course, you can always change the display options if you don't like this kind of color tuning.

Additionally, it has a dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz, a maximum luminance of 900 nits, Dolby Vision HDR, and other features. So, yes, there is no difference in how these two phones show information. And I have no doubt that you'll adore this screen.

The Note 12 Pro's monitor and loud, full-range stereo speakers make watching movies and listening to music a blast. This device also has some really cool haptics. It isn't as accurate or powerful as competitors' models like the Realme 10 Pro+, but it is also not as buzzy or feeble as those.

Unfortunately, Xiaomi has reduced the touch sampling rate from 360Hz on the Redmi Note 11 Pro series from last year to 240Hz this time around. As a consequence, I've noticed that this level of responsiveness is lacking, whether I'm typing messages or playing games. Even though it's not a deal-breaker at all, you should be aware of it.

6.Battery

The Redmi Note 12 Pro has a similarly fantastic battery life. I regularly spend around 6-7 hours in front of a computer. or, on a leisurely day, 8 hours. Fantastic! Additionally, as I stated at the outset, it has 67W fast charging as opposed to 120W on the Note 12 Pro+.

Although the luxury of 120W charging, which can fully charge a phone in about 20 minutes, is quite impressive, in my opinion, 67W is plenty fast. It also contributes to keeping the phone's price low while assuring a good user experience, so everything works out in the end.
